When I wear ski boots, I need extra cushioning on my shins, so these socks work great for me. The area in the photo with the horizontal stripes is actually thicker than the rest of the upper sock. As a Police Officer I spend long hours on my feet. With the recent arctic temperatures hitting New England without warm socks I would be in trouble.
